What canine surgery actually costs in Talleyville
If your regular vet on Concord Pike has just referred you on, and the estimate that came back was $3,000 or more, the figure probably felt arbitrary. It is not. But very little of it is about the operation itself.
Below is what each procedure costs through Talleyville Dog Surgery, what that figure includes, and what tends to push it higher.

| Procedure | Our starting price | Typical referral / ER quote |
|---|---|---|
| Mass & tumor removal | $450 | $1,200 – $2,500 |
| Dental & oral surgery | $150 – $950 | $800 – $2,500 |
| Bladder stone surgery (cystotomy) | $950 | $2,500 – $4,000 |
| Emergency pyometra surgery | $1,100 | $2,500 – $5,000 |
| Foreign body removal | $1,200 | $3,000 – $5,000 |
| Splenectomy | $1,500 | $3,500 – $6,000 |
| Traumatic fracture repair | $1,800 | $3,500 – $7,000 |
The referral figures are the ranges owners routinely show us when they arrive with an estimate in hand. They vary by hospital and by how unwell the dog is when it arrives. All of our figures are 2026 pricing.
Where the 30-40% saving comes from
Canine surgery in northern Delaware became expensive for structural reasons, not clinical ones. Over the past decade, most referral and emergency hospitals serving the Wilmington area and the wider I-95 corridor were bought by corporate groups. Facilities grew, overhead grew, and the surgical invoice absorbed it.
Our network works differently. We coordinate experienced general practice veterinary surgeons in New Castle County who already do this work every week. They carry a fraction of that overhead, and the difference reaches you instead of a facilities budget.
What does not change is the safety standard.

Included in every price on this page
Pre-anesthetic blood screening, anesthesia, continuous SpO2 / ECG / blood pressure / temperature monitoring, localized nerve blocks where relevant, home-recovery medications, a structured discharge checklist, a 24/7 recovery text line, and a complimentary 10-to-14 day surgical healing evaluation.
What is quoted separately, and why
We would rather itemize honestly than hide extras inside a headline figure.
- Histopathology on a removed mass or spleen. Optional, often worthwhile, and always your decision.
- Advanced imaging, such as abdominal ultrasound or extra radiographs, when the diagnosis is not clear from the first films.
- Stone analysis after a cystotomy, which decides the preventive diet.
- Intestinal resection and anastomosis when an obstruction has damaged a section of bowel.
- Extended inpatient support for dogs who arrive septic or in shock.
- Serial recheck radiographs through a fracture’s healing period.
Each of these is quoted before it happens. Nothing is added to your bill without your agreement.
What makes one dog’s surgery cost more than another’s
Three factors explain most of the variation within a single procedure:
Complexity. One small skin lump and four deep subcutaneous masses are the same operation on paper and very different on the table. A gastrotomy for an object still in the stomach is shorter and simpler than an enterotomy on bowel that has been blocked for three days.
Timing. This is the factor owners control. An obstruction operated on today is often a $1,200 procedure. The same obstruction left until the weekend may need foreign body surgery with resection and anastomosis, longer anesthesia, and more intensive aftercare. Delay is the most expensive choice available.
Your dog’s condition on arrival. A stable dog needs less support than a septic, dehydrated one. Pyometra caught early costs less to treat than pyometra caught after the uterus has ruptured. With so many senior dogs in established Talleyville neighborhoods, earlier assessment of lumps and urinary changes is one of the simplest ways to keep costs down.
Why the cheapest quote is not always the best one
There is a floor below which something has been taken out of the protocol. When you compare estimates, check for:
- Pre-anesthetic bloodwork. Is it included, or an extra you can decline?
- Who watches your dog under anesthesia. A dedicated person with a multi-parameter monitor, or the surgeon glancing over?
- Which parameters are monitored. A pulse oximeter on its own is not SpO2, ECG, blood pressure, and temperature.
- Nerve blocks and pain relief. Included, or billed per injection?
- Follow-up. Is the recheck free, or another consultation fee?
A quote that leaves out three of those five will always look better on paper. It is not the same operation.
Financing
We accept cash, credit card, and CareCredit. CareCredit spreads the cost of surgery over monthly payments and is widely used by owners across New Castle County. If money is what stands between your dog and surgery, tell us when you book. There is usually more flexibility than owners expect, and none of it is available if we do not know.
Getting an exact figure for your dog
The prices above are starting points, and a starting point is not a quote. To give you a real number we need your dog’s breed and age, what has been diagnosed so far, the symptoms you are seeing, and whether any imaging has already been done.
Send that through and we will come back with a realistic range, what is included, what might be added, and the soonest surgical date, normally within days. If you already have an estimate from another hospital, send it too. We will go through it line by line, including the parts where they are charging for something genuinely worth having.
Whether you need bladder stone surgery, an emergency procedure, or you are simply trying to decide whether a lump is worth removing yet, asking costs nothing. Request an exact quote or call (302) 599-0299, and we will tell you honestly what your dog needs.
