## What a lipoma is

A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fat cells. It sits under the skin, feels soft and slightly squishy, moves freely when you roll it between your fingers, and grows slowly over months or years.

Lipomas are very common in middle-aged and older dogs, and especially common in Labradors, golden retrievers, and other larger breeds carrying a little extra weight. Most dogs who develop one go on to develop several. Our

sees more of these than any other mass, which is no surprise in a community like Talleyville, where so many family retrievers are now well into their senior years.

Nobody knows exactly why they form. Age, breed, and body condition all play a part, but plenty of lean young dogs get them and plenty of heavier older dogs never do.

## When a lipoma stops being harmless

The default for a confirmed lipoma is to leave it alone. Four situations change that.

**It is getting in the way of movement.** This is the most common reason we remove them. A lipoma in the armpit, the groin, or high on a hind leg physically interferes with the limb. A typical example is a ten-year-old Lab whose owners put his reluctance on the stairs down to age, until they noticed a lipoma the size of a grapefruit behind his elbow. Two weeks after it came off, he was taking the stairs two at a time again.

**It sits where equipment rubs.** A lipoma under a collar or harness strap gets chafed repeatedly, turns sore, and can ulcerate.

**It is growing quickly or has changed.** Lipomas grow slowly. One that is visibly bigger over a few weeks, or has become firmer, is not behaving like a lipoma and should be retested with a fine-needle aspirate.

**It might be an infiltrative lipoma.** These grow between and into muscle rather than sitting in a tidy capsule. They do not spread to other organs, but they invade locally, keep expanding, and are much harder to remove once established.

> **“Benign” and “leave it alone” are not the same conclusion.**

## How the removal works

A simple lipoma is usually well encapsulated, so the surgery is relatively clean. The surgeon makes an incision over the mass, frees the capsule from the surrounding tissue, and lifts the whole lipoma out in one piece.

The part that takes care is the closure. Removing a large lipoma leaves a space behind, and that space is where fluid collects. Closing the dead space carefully in layers reduces the risk of a seroma, and the skin is closed with subcuticular sutures so there are no external staples to catch on anything.

Before any of that, your dog has pre-anesthetic blood screening, and throughout surgery, continuous monitoring of blood oxygen, ECG rhythm, blood pressure, and core temperature. That protocol does not change just because the mass is benign.

## Recovery

Most dogs go home the same day and are clearly comfortable within 48 hours.

The two weeks after surgery are about restraint: lead walks only, no jumping, no rough play, no swimming, and a cone whenever your dog is unsupervised. The restriction is doing real work, because movement is what keeps the space under the incision open and lets fluid build up.

A soft swelling under the incision in the first week is usually a seroma. It is generally harmless and settles on its own, but mention it at the follow-up. Spreading redness, heat, discharge, or a gap in the incision needs a call sooner.

The complimentary healing evaluation takes place at 10 to 14 days, when we check the site and clear your dog to go back to normal walks.

## What it costs

Lipoma removal starts at $450, rising with size and depth. If your dog has several and you are thinking about removing more than one, doing them under a single anesthetic is almost always cheaper and safer than separate procedures. Talleyville Dog Surgery will tell you honestly which ones genuinely warrant removal and which can simply be measured and watched.

Guide FAQ

## Questions owners ask

01Does every lipoma need to come off?

No. Most lipomas are harmless and can be left alone. Removal is worthwhile when one grows large enough to get in the way of movement, sits where a harness or collar rubs, changes character, or when there is any doubt that it really is a simple lipoma.

02Can a lipoma be dangerous?

The ordinary kind is benign and does not spread. The exception is the infiltrative lipoma, which grows into surrounding muscle rather than sitting in a neat capsule. It does not spread to other organs, but it invades locally and keeps expanding, so it needs surgery.

03What does lipoma removal cost?

From around $450, rising with the size and depth of the mass. The starting figure includes pre-anesthetic bloodwork, anesthesia, continuous monitoring, the excision, a cosmetic subcuticular closure, medications, and the follow-up healing evaluation.
